had gas once... very very weird... felt like floating off of the table, until i was out cold... coming to after the procedure was weird, very dreamy- brother had to fireman carry me to the car... slept the rest of the day

So you re telling me I most likely won't even be able to have a cab take me home - my partner has to work, can't get out of it.

I'm afraid I'm going to be puking all over the place.

I'm weird. They are going to cut a 6-inch hole in my back and remove one of my lamina and a disc, and I'm worried about anesthesia.

    Derrrr...

I read some of these posts and wonder if the people debating "What good is the Ipad?" are paying any attention to what people are doing. And, I mean, doing now that they never did before...

I took notes in university in longhand. I'd never do that again. Not when I can sit there (or, someone else can) and record the lectures on a digital recorder. Most lectures you only need to hear twice before you've squeezed out what there is to get. If I took notes, it would be from the replay - and I'd fast forward through that! Then again, what are email and Skype good for?

Mobile phones were a hilarious idea when I first heard about them. And, I first heard about them because the engineering students were working out how to do "cells" so you could move around. You could see the sole antennae tower (Up there!) as you used the phone - outside - and you could also usually see a bank of pay phones somewhere around you at the same time where you could make calls for a dime. Now, you go to the can and talk on the sh****er and people think this is "normal."

I used to spend hours in the language lab parroting tapes. Ridiculous idea now to go to dedicated building, to a special room, to ask some guy to change your tape from his "star trek" booth in the front of the "lab." And, don't ask me about all the lectures and stuff that used to be on LP records that you had to check out - after you got there in the rain - from the library. (Remember those?) As for "Educational TV..." Egad, the amount of effort spent getting everyone to sit down in the darkened classroom. And, over head projectors.... Snooze....

And, dictionaries and reference manuals and, oh yeah, textbooks... We're talking 80 pounds of books to keep track of and haul around. A few people were destructive/smart enough to take their notes IN the book. Hell if you forgot them, or, lost them, however...

I could go on, but I wonder if I was ever dumb enough to really care about the negatives being offered about this device when there are so many clear advantages to this and others being used in combination.

Last, I volunteer teach a number of skills and hobbies and have noted that the PC generation would "drill down" into an issue a lot more than the current "google" generation can even imagine doing. My generation would read books, take notes, and discuss things. The PC generation would read books, figure out some way to graph things, and then argue the results. The current group honestly thinks - in the way that they think - that every question has an answer and it can be looked up. Any sentence longer than ten words puts them to sleep.

Still, they have a point. This Ipad, and other devices, is/are a tremendous learning and work shortcut and people will become increasingly addicted. They won't be wise, or, good neighbors, but they will be good customers for anything - including your offerings - if you can keep it simple, and quickly accessible.

    Hear hear!

Excellent examples of good advertising. Nothing about the HP ads insulted the target audience, stereotyped, or posted stuff the viewers knew was false (therefore ensuring distrust of the maker.)

There's so much that's good about the Mac, and the current ads hide those positive traits in favour of defining the Mac in terms of the PC and generating hostility at the same time.

I know a lot of PC users. I know geeks and non-geeks alike. I can't say I've met anyone who thought better of the Mac after watching the "I'm a Mac" ads, and I've met several that thought worse of it. And geeks are telling their families and friends, at the moment, that the ads are misleading, and Apple's reputation is suffering as a result.

I don't think for the general public the ads really do much, the emotional reaction to the ads is mostly confined to geeks and geek press. Really, for people looking for a computer any commercial about Apple, especially a beautiful and well-designed one, is a good thing and reminds them about the company and it's very cool systems.
But, I like the cool stuff aspect of HP's ads rather than the Mac vs. PC version of the 'Get a Mac' ads.

I may end up waiting for the inevitable 3DS "lite". $250 seems like a lot for a handheld console and I am not impressed with the battery life. Quite frankly I am not impressed with the launch lineup either. A few of them are games I would buy if I had the 3DS already, but they're not exactly console sellers for me.

Plus Pokmon Black & White will keep my DSi in fairly good use for a long while. :D

    Canada, you're screwed. :(
Oh please. If the NDP had got in then Canada would be royally screwed. The NDP has a poor record in a number of provinces of running the provincial governments into deep deficits and scaring away businesses.

I would take the opinion piece from someone with the Toronto Star with a little bit of salt. They are like the Huffington Post of Canada or a left leaning Canadian version of those British tabloids that they try to pass for "newspapers" in England.

    Let's see...

Most successful desktop operating system: Microsoft Windows.
Most successful server operating system: Microsoft Windows Server.
Most successful office suite: Microsoft Office.

Three good reasons (and there would be more like Exchange Server, Sharepoint Portal, SQL Server, Visual Studio) to also have confidence in the man if he were hired as a product manager.

Completely unrelated. Despite the fact that being the most successful != being the best (Or infact being reality), the guy should be hired based on his CV and own leadership skills, not the work of other PMs and Engineers.

Like it or not, Microsoft still is the most IMPORTANT software company around, and they don't hire incompetent idiots either.

Great last pitch there. Maybe I should start going on about how RedHat and Oracle essentially run the world. Might balance out all the crap by having it coming out form all sides. I mean, RedHat AND Oracle don't hire idiots. >.>

I do wish people in this forum stop referring to 'the military' as though they were some sort of alien life-forms. 'The military' are people, and even if you happen to be in the oh-so-unique moral high ground of opposing war and violence from your comfortable desk, soldiers deserve the best kit we can afford to give them. Ditto for the returning veterans. And their families.

Well said. Thank you. I agree 100%.

However, both the OP and citizenzen's posts show that lowering a state's tax rate doesn't guarantee either high-income for its citizens or create high tax receipts.

This is a common refrain from conservatives who will often reference the Laffer Curve and will argue that if only a state lowered its taxes, more money would become available.

I wasn't making that argument so I guess I was confused why it was brought up. I've only been making an argument that the article can't conclude cutting taxes resulted in the budget problem. A state may have cut taxes and their economy might not have improved since cutting taxes, but the author of the article needs to fill in the gap and explain why there is a correlation/causation. I propose that you could run a state with some income tax or no income tax if the budget was made competently. So, IMO, cutting taxes does not, in and of itself, mean it has caused a budget shortfall. I personally think cutting taxes does help the economy but that's not what is at issue here.

I have only a general understanding of the theories those guys you mentioned are famous for. I think Austrian economics make much more sense. A theory of how to get the maximum tax dollars out of the people is irrelevant to me. It's like studying how much blood you can drain from people while keeping them alive. My preferred income tax rate is 0.

You understand that you're probably unique in your circumstances.

I wouldn't have believed it 3 years ago but now I can say from experience that anyone can do it if that's what they want to do. It's all a matter of hard work and willingness to live cheaply. The only thing that might tie you down is a family. I live for traveling so I've just worked my life to be able to do what I like. 3 years ago I was a law school dropout with no prospects and a monthly loan repayment of $1100. The highest paying job I qualified for was tutoring.

    How long is the line?

    10? 20? 50?

Well, I'm not very good at guessing numbers but it goes all the way around the corner now. :) We had one rather arsey guy who tried to queue jump to the front of the queue but the security swiftly dealed with him at which point he screamed that we were all sad loser geeks.

I'm not saying its a necessity I'm just saying Apple's curve of sales is going up while Nokia and other manufactures are losing sales with the model suggested in the article.

I'm not saying Apple couldn't pull it of, maybe they can I'm just saying I'm skeptical of this report. That's all :)

You are pulling figures out of thin-air. Where is your proof that the reason Nokia and other manufactures aren't doing well is because they have more than one type of phone?

So far I just did the first upgrade, went into windows and I'm at UDMA 5 now...was at UDMA 4 with the slipstreamed driver XP install. I still get 59MB/s which is good with the 160 stock HD.

I think what the OP really means to talk about is discrimination, not racism.

yeah - to clarify, I mean racism in practice should be illegal. Holding racist views, however distasteful, should be legal as we should be free to hold our own opinions as long as we don't harm others by them.

It is the distinction between prejudice and discrimination.

I am not racist in mind or practice, for the record, and personally argue against anybody who is either!

Grrrrr, I can't decide. Looks like I'll probably get the 32GB.. 399 + $45 taxes. Anyone think $444 worth it for the older 32 or do better deals exist? I'm somewhat convinced since it is new.

I'm debating this as well. I think I'm just going to end up buying the Ipad 2 16gb for $100 more. I don't need 32gb.
