Pages and Number are TRASH compared to Word and Excel(especially excel)

    Keynote is actually pretty good!

I actually prefer Pages to Work. As well in Keynote vs Power Point.

Tho I agree... Numbers is useless.

I'm with Rogers in Canada and my iPhone 3G Date & Time had "Set Automatically" to ON. I had to change "Set Automatically" to OFF before the time corrected itself. My Time Zone is set to Toronto.

My Mac changed correctly (Leopard 10.5.8) and the Set Date & Time automatically checkbox was ticked.

I'd say Apple have a problem with iOS 4.2.1 as well. Governments around the world should stop dicking around with Daylight Savings. That would solve the problem.

A car that gets 60 mpg will do just as much 'damage' to a road surface as a car that get 8 mpg....but the 50mpg car will pay much, MUCH less for upkeep of that road than the other in a gas-tax based situation.

so a prius does the same amount of damage to a road as full size RV?

after all this hype if iOS 5 is just a small improvement that would be ludicrous.

How long have you been reading MR?

Unbelievable hype/expectations and constant disappointment when these expectations don't meet our delusions is what drives this site!

To squash some WinTel people in this forum/post trying to say Windows scales better than UNIX.

Spec of a Sun machine running UNIX.

    Key Specifications:

Up to 106 UltraSPARC III Cu 900-MHz processors.
Big memory - more than 1/2 TB.
Up to 18 fifth-generation Dynamic System Domains, which are fully configurable while applications are running.
Hot-swappable Uniboard design CPU/memory boards that are common across Sun Fire server family.
Redundant, high-performance Sun[tm] Fireplane Interconnect with up to 172.8 GBps peak bandwidth.
Full redundancy of power and cooling systems.

Oh yeah! OS X is UNIX also. Hmmm.

Single CPU vs. Multi CPU. Who cares?

    Macs are the whole package.

    Nuff said!

    Sigh.,

The problem is with RAID systems that you have to boot of a Non-Raid OS-x Boot Drive, run the two sets of firmware update, then move back to RAID drives.

Technically: the firware is stored on a specific sector of the hard drive, the computer reboots into special firmware loading software, the firmware loading software naively tries to search for the firm ware at a specific location on the hard drive. If you have RAID, its not going to find the firmware.

You can leave your RAID drives visible (you don't have to unplug anything) but you do have to boot of a booring-normal OS X setup.

There are few ways you can do this:
    * Install OS X on an External drive
    * Install OS X on an iPod harddrive (20 gig model, etc).
    * etc.

    Its a pain.

Alright, if this is the case, then the problem is not with Apple, but the game publishers.
...AND the adult owners of the idevices.

Agree 100% - as I said in my original post, I don't think Apple are in any way culpable here: It's not their job to set prices for apps or in-app purchases. I also think Parents need to accept responsibility and watch their kids more carefully.

My only issue with this is the exploitative behavior of the publishers of the Apps - I can't think of any reason for charging the huge prices they do apart from someone thinking "Some parents are dumb and won't know how to stop their kids spending huge wads of cash on in-app purchases. We can make loads of money by using this to our advantage".
That shouldn't be what in-app purchases are used for: even if it doesn't break any rules, it's not at all ethical.
I know businesses exist to make money, but they shouldn't do it in an unethical and immoral way IMO.

The last time I had surgery (January 2, 1986) I was knocked out via IV.

As for what it felt like...

They had put the IV in before I had gone into surgery, and it really wasn't that bad. When the doctor and his assistant showed up the anesthesiologist let me know that it was time.

He ask me to start counting backwards from 100. I felt a warm sensation moving up my arm from the IV and then into my chest. A moment later I felt like I was walking out of a fog... but I wasn't, I was lying in recovery... and I got sick.

It took a few minutes to finally become completely cognizant of my surroundings, but all and all it wasn't a bad experience. The time for the surgery was completely gone (as if it hadn't happened). It felt like (going from fully awake before the surgery back to fully awake again after) it had only taken a couple minutes (the surgery was about 4 hours as I recall).

I'm going to go out on a limb and postulate that the next release won't be iOS5, nor will the next phone be iPhone 5. Reason being, as someone already stated in the forums a few days ago, this release is more likely to be iterative--evolutionary, not revolutionary. The new design of iPhone 4 will stand, and the only changes outwardly might be the screen. Everything else is inside.

I think '5' is a catchy number, and Apple will reserve it for the 2012 iPhone. We'll see a whole new, magical iOS5 and with it, iPhone 5! Dun, dun, duuuuun!!! (or should I say, BOOM!)

I think you'll see iOS4.5 with all these cool little tweaks to the UI (and I REALLY hope improvements to notifications), and the new iPhone 4NS (New Screen or some such) in September.

The military and the Army has had a "dialogue" with Apple for years... pretty much every project involving a piece of field equipment has gone to another manufacturer because of durability concerns.

The U.S. Military has been using Apple Computers for years. I know for a fact they were crucial in the development of RFID tracking used in logistics. They were also more difficult to hack into and required less IT support to maintain them in the field.

The point of PP seems to be to get rid of the consequences

PP offers a too easy fix to people's indiscretion

No, the point of PP is to give the tools and education to prevent pregnancy and disease. Abortion is a service offerred when there is an unwanted pregnancy.

My friend, there is nothing easy about abortion.

It posts wall posts, private messages, invitations, the lot. I hate that app on Facebook. I have it blocked now.

How do you block farmville? It's annoying me the amount of posts I get a day from people who've found a sparkly pure egg or a wounded badger. I'd love to not have all that guff clogging up my iPhone screen.

I am having similar issues with notification sounds in that I get none. Not too fussed but would be nice if it did exactly what it said on the tin.

Everytime I used to reset my Mac Pro it used to make a lovely little intro chime. After getting the update it doesn't seem to be making it anymore. Anyone else having this same problem?

Doubtfully. It would be more likely a Power4. the G naming scheme is getting old really fast. It never takes this long to make a processor. Apple must really have something big up their sleves.

i don't think we can do 'pass it on' thing on this forum. but we do need more involvement.

i know a lot of people on this forum have some very nice computer power. and i'm sure they do use them 24/7 either. we could be a great team. i'm doing all i can already

Thats great, I'm doing all I can to at the moment. Might not be able to cope with all that PPD as it is a laptop doing it all :D My goal is to get to 100k in points then to get into the top 100 :)

Remember all those who join, team number is 3446.

Uh, why? How is it shameful? This isn't an item that is even remotely usable for studying with alone - what other electronics company does student discount on the scale that Apple does? The iPad is a glorified iPod touch, it is not a learning device (yet), not will it replace a computer in the home unless all you use is Facebook, even then you can't upload photos without the use of another computer.

Sarcasm, right? Any student, it doesn't even fulfill the needs of half of all students. It can't print, for one! Nor can you put pictures or anything onto it without the use of another computer, so how exactly does it replace a computer?

Like the way you just picked out a solitary post, ignored my other post, just to make your point ;0)

I said it's a companion device in a later post. I was a student, and I agree I wouldn't write an essay on an iPad. My 80wpm isn't blistering, but it would be slowed right down by the iPad and I would want to get my thoughts on the screen as quickly as possible

What it is good for is note taking in lectures, using the diary on the go, being able to surf the net, reference quickly, carry core texts around with you (core texts not replacing half a dozen books that need to be open at hte same time for quick reference), great for e mail on the go, great for facebook in those boring lectures where you're struggling to keep your self awake, and lots of other handy things.

Where it falls down is the lack of multi tasking, porn, illegal downloading, and lots of other things students find handy :D

I used a palm during my uni years, the think was fricking amazing for what I wanted it to do at the time. You don't always need to carry around one device that does it all, sometimes simplicity and convenience is what it's all about

Funnily enough I agree with your points, just don't try and bend what someone else has said to try and fit the point you want to make, you'll lose marks for that in your exams/ essays ;)

It seems like the majority of the comments are about Price, personal purchase and Higher ed use cases. All of these comments miss the point of what the announcement is about, institutional purchases. This is about school's buying large quantities, and really, since I have a hard time imagining that a University would be buying 10 packs of iPods . Yes, I know that schools like ACU have innovative 1:1 ipod /phone programs where they provide devices to the student, that is not really what this bundle is about). The target audience of a program like this is clearly K12. It is similar to bundles that apple currently has of 32 iPod touches and a Bretford cart or use in a K12 classroom.

This is all interesting, but the biggest challenge and obstacle that Apple has in K12 is that the iPod ecosystem is a consumer model. It is also not a Higher ed model, where students own their own device and are conditioned to the requiremet of buying their content. I work as a technologist for a 200+ school district and we have been trying to figure out for the better part of a year how to make this consumer product work in k12 setting.

We've been running pilots in several schools / classes since late spring of 09 and the biggest problem we have is getting a straight answer on how to liscence paid applications. We've asked several Apple representatives "if I buy a class set of 32 ipods, and I want to use a paid app, how many copies does the school need to buy, how many itunes accounts do we need, how many computers do we need to sync all 32 devices and how can we purchase using ta purchase order (no school is going to relish tying a credit card to a personal account, or cutting a PO for 30 $25 itunes gift cards!)

The answer we have gotten back every time has been not 32, not 1, not 1 for every 5 devices, but the question does not apply, the iPod and iTunes are consumer products and the enduser agreement is for consumers not institutions, and when asked for advice we've been told that Apple does not provide interpretations of their agreements and how we choose to interpret it is a mater that we should take up with our in-house council.

The good will and glow of Apple in education will continue to drive adoption of the ipod and ipad. I know millions of stimulus dollars went to ipods in school districts around the country, unfortunately, until Apple accepts the fact that school districts are not individuals and they have to "think different" and work with us when we ask for advice on how to successfully use their products in K12, much of the money and the potential will go o waste.

I hold my hand up, I did miss the point. I confused this with being one and the same as a student/ teacher discount. I didn't engage my brain there for a second.

I think Apple should give good discounts to educational establishments and students, hell it's far cheaper for them than marketing campaigns. Hook a student on an Apple and you've got a customer for life!
