just to clarify, i'm not asking for advice in if I should invest. I understand concerns that apple has hit an all time high, but I strongly believe it will only increase in the next year.

If anyone has any advice as to how I can do this that would be great.

Call your local discount broker's office- TD Ameritrade, eTrade and ask them if it's possible.

I recently realized the existence of void pointers. These are quite useful if the primitive type for a data storage class is not known. Though, I have a question as to whether I am using them correctly.
My storage class will allocate memory and keep track of the byte size of the individual pieces. The user then set and extract bytes via void * pointers.
The storage class then copies bytes to and from the storage memory as needed. Basically my own crude implementation of NSMutableArray/NSMutableData.
The user gets back a void * pointer and then casts this into whatever is needed. Yes, probably too much responsibility is given to the user.
Anyway, I am concerned about memory leaks. To return a value, I memcpy() the bytes into a newly created memory malloc(). But there is no corresponding free().
The user has to free the memory. But calling free after casting and dereferencing causes a crash. Does memory have to be freed in this case? See last for loop.
Thanks for reading, replying and hopefully a lesson in pointers.

i've generated my password file w/ the htpasswd command.

my .htaccess file looks like this:

    AuthUserFile /Users/zim/Sites/.htpasswd
    AuthName ByPassword
    AuthType Basic
    Require valid-user

    i've removed index.html from ~/Sites. when i browse to http://127.0.0.1/~zim, i get a directory listing, but no user/password challenge.

this is my first foray into apache. i've made no changes to the default install (i'm on osx 10.2.6). here's some apache info:

The only logical thing, should anything get released, would be Final Cut Server.

Other related products are DVD Studio Pro 5, Blu-Ray Drives, Phenomenon (Shake Successor) and Cinema Displays. I do not expect the first three until NAB at the earliest. The Displays maybe at the developers conference.

Apple would not announce Newton 2 at a Final Cut User Event.

Yea thats the most logical thing. But I wasn't saying it would be the Newton 2. I was saying it would be some kind of multimedia editing tablet. The newton 2 just being a rumor based off some random person who didn't have the full story. Ah well, I'm just floating around in dreamland so don't mind me ;)

We have a small graphic design firm... four designers working on Illustrator and InDesign files... files might be 200MB to 1GB, generally. Really varies. Might be a brochure, logo design, packaging, whatever.

We have a Mac Mini Server running Snow Leopard Server, attached to a Promise RAID. All our files are on this unit. (Backed up regularly, yada yada.) We have a gigabit network, so it's plenty fast to move files around, etc...

    here's the issue/question...

Our designers generally work on the files "on the server" rather than copy them down to their drives to work. They think it's faster and more efficient, and reduces the chances of extra files being created, or deleting the wrong one, or issues with "which version" is the most current, etc. Copying up and down files takes time, they say.

I argue (I'm the tech guy, not a designer) that it's asking for trouble. That working "off the server" could create file corruption if there's a network issue, or if there's an issue with a computer that's working on the file, or whathaveyou. I also think it's slow, even though it's a fast network. Any time saved "copying the file up or down" is going to be lost waiting for files to open and save and render and whatnot. I think it's very INefficient. All around, I just think it's a bad idea.

Whether it's a good idea, or a bad idea, or a standard practice, well, what say you? And if you think it's asking for trouble, what's the best way to deal with stuff like this? A different server? Is there good software that allows for making sure you're working on the current file, etc...? What are other graphic design firms doing in this regard?

If this isn't the best place for the post, let me know and I'll see if I can have it moved.

    Thanks in advance.

You should be able to do this:

    > cd /Volumes
    > ls

Will give you the names of all mounted volumes -- you should see "Macintosh HD" listed, for instance. You should also see the ext hd. Use its name exactly as it is listed in the Volumes diretory. If it is indeed "New Volume," then you can:

    cd "/Volumes/New Volume"
    or
cd "New Volume" (if you're already in Volumes)

Notice the quotes. One funny aside, is that if you cd into "Macintosh HD," you get the same as the root directory. So your working directory can eventually be:

    /volumes/macintosh hd/volumes/macintos hd/volumes/macintosh hd/.../

    :D

of course, taking them in to a photo shop is always an option, but for alot of photos, it becomes more cost-effective to buy your own scanner. Was just wondering which was considered to have especially good color fidelity.

    Hi,
I have two internet connections here, one via GBit-Ethernet to my Mac Mini and a slower one connected to my WiFi router. I just bought a wireless printer, thus I need to connect the Mini to the WiFi to print.

I think this is not explicitly specified, but which connection will be used to route to the internet? It would be unfortunate to use the WiFi, as it's about 5 times slower.

Can I set the wired connection to be default for all connections, and route only the traffic that really has to go into the WiFi? All that comes to mind at the moment is removing the gateway/router address.

    Better ideas?

I run a windows server at home with my movie collection and it has that uptime and then some.
In fact the only time it goes down is when the power goes out or I turn it off when I go on vacation.

On my acer windows 7 laptop, aside from going to sleep I haven't restarted it in months.

I hope my advice helps diagnose the problem.
And I hope others chime in.

Sorry about the recent batch of Puckish humor.
I deal with tech problems all the time.
I'm just a little worn. I just had somebody nuke an amp. With a sweaty unwaxed paper cup. I not getting any audio and my cup has a hole it.

The truth about dog pee is true. A good early indicator that your you dog is diabetic is a line of ants visiting their slightly syrupy pee. Some other signs are here (http://www.gsdhelpline.com/diabeticdog.htm)!

I'm looking for some more links on LCD and backlight yellowing. I havent experienced yellowing LCDs, and I work with a few dozen. I have experienced color skewing and pixel failures, but not yellowing.

    I should also spell check.

That iMac model is perfect for your needs. Its specs out of the box will fulfill all of your needs using aperture, lightroom and similar apps. When you evolve to advanced photo editing at the photoshop level, with large RAW FILES, and bulk processing, you and your mac will apprecite a ram upgrade to 8-16 gigs. My 2009 27" i5 just literally dropped dead after 14 months if 10/4 use in my office, so I'm replacing it with that exact model. Most bang for the buck. Excellent resale.

I upgraded my iMovie to version 9.0.1 through the Mac App Store. This 9.0.2 update doesn't show up in Software Update, but does show up in the App Store. Is this the way it's supposed to work?

I just assumed the Apple product updates would appear in Software Update like they always did.
