The article states that tax cuts have not worked. They seem to be basing that claim on the fact that the states have not seen improvement in their economies after the tax cuts. That is not the correct metric with which to judge the effectiveness of any policy. The question should be whether the economy would have been even worse without the tax cuts. The article does not address this.

Not sure if i like the gloss black. I remember seeing PS3s that were covered in smudges and streaks. My current 360 can be cleaned fairly easy.
I also don't know about using the wifi. Its just a few more milliseconds to add onto the latency. Playing FPS I can tell the difference between 70ms, and >50ms. I had DSL and then cable last summer and could tell a difference. Round a corner and you are dead before you can even touch the trigger.
I do like how they made it smaller, and if they can quiet down the dvd drive that would be very nice. Bigger hard drive is about time. My 20GB is full just from downloading maps for Halo and COD.

actually, dell makes insanely great computers. their stock video cards generally aren't very good, but you can fix that easily.
apple needs to catch up quickly. it's getting sad and pathetic. especially with the rumors that apple is just now scrambling to find someone to manufacture/replace the G5 or equivalent.

We all know that this is just Adobe's Revenge for Apple stepping on its e-Toes with items like Final Cut Studio which for all practical purposes smacks down anything that Adobe can muster up, and for Aperature, which is not as good as it could be, but is still in the realm that Adobe used to dominate. On the audio front, I hope that this costs a lot less than Logic Express because if it's not 50% or more cheaper, this horse is dead before it leaves the gate. I mean, Logic is already cheaper than Audition, and for my money, LE does a bit more than Audition (granted I don't come even close to using the full capabilities of LE).
So maybe Soundbooth is just here to compete with Soundtrack, which is kind of dumb, as no one will be using Soundbooth on a Mac since soundbooth will not integrate with FCS the way that Soundtrack does. The more I write about it, the dumber releasing this app for the Mac sounds. I mean. . . Adobe dropped Premiere for the mac because FCP smoked it, but now they want to release an audio app for mac that probably only has a place in a Premiere workflow. Somehow, I knew you would reply like you did. Again, I have a job in an actual data center as a systems administrator. Let me tell you, I know the real story. ;) And it's not just my company. Go take a look around and see how many shops use Windows to run their SAP environnements. Their peoplesoft stuff. Heck, just their lowly Oracle installations.
And who said I was talking about Enterprise Macs ? My Unix boxes cost well over 100k$ a piece.

Granted, we weren't running anything like SAP or Peoplesoft, but the servers virtually all Windows based. We had a few Solaris boxes scattered about, but that was about it. Actually Dale - hats off to you for resurrecting the challenge. While I enjoy many of the threads in MR, this is by far the one of greatest interest to me. Taking on a challenge and working to achieve it in an image; getting specific feedback from others ... these are invaluable. Thanks much.
Now to figure out "beauty in unexpected places". this one is, for me, a much harder concept. At least, to do so without being cliche.

Hmm, I'm still going around the Guides getting used to the layout and it is kind of all over the place, too many categories and subcategories, and neither of them is particularly strong either, and it follows the exact layout of Wikipedia (same software of course) for categories which is just poorly designed.
For one thing you should never aim to have a single category for miscellaneous articles, it's poor form, and while it makes for a nice organization tool until something can be categorized, it would make more sense to just categorize something at the articles creation.
Gaming is a subset of software in this case, games themselves are just software after all, having a subcategory for gaming maybe, but Apple has 0 dedicated hardware for gaming, gaming is just another feature in the case of the iPod or something that their hardware is capable of running such as with the iPhone or Mac OS X.
The thing that's getting in the way of my ideas for organization is the distinction between Apple's platforms, Macs, iPhones, and iTunes. So I propose they be grouped together to cut down on more useless categories since some of those articles might apply to both Macs and iPhones or both iPhones and iTunes.
How about this:
Hardware— Mac, Server, iPhone, iPod
You propose subcategories for Laptops and Desktops but Apple's entire Hardware lineup currently consists of 6 computers, 3 Desktops and 3 Laptops. If you want to count in past models then it starts to make more sense, but not enough to call for a distinction between the two, especially since there's no need for separate articles consisting of every single model ever released, so for example, the PowerMacs could be grouped together, the iBooks grouped together, the iMacs grouped together, and all the others. Maybe one more subcategory for accessories but that doesn't draw a clear enough line between Mac accessories and iPod accessories, so stuff like Cinema Displays should just be categorized with Macs and FM transmitters with the iPod category. The Apple TV of course would also go under iPod.
Software— Mac OS X and Operating Systems, iPhone OS, Developer, Games
Mac OS X can cover Mac software, UNIX programs, and Server software, it's kind of a lot to cover though so maybe either UNIX or Server could be broken out into a new subcategory if the Mac OS X category started growing too large. The Laffer Curve makes sense. You find a balance and you have taxes that are low enough not to hinder the economy and high enough to fund the government. I really don't understand where this "keep lowering taxes" logic comes from. It certainly has nothing to do with the Laffer Curve.
The Laffer Curve is often referenced, but you're correct about it's actual meaning. Some conservatives have taken the Curve to mean that lowering taxes will always bring about more revenue. Something this article is trying to address.
I wasn't making that argument so I guess I was confused why it was brought up. I've only been making an argument that the article can't conclude cutting taxes resulted in the budget problem. A state may have cut taxes and their economy might not have improved since cutting taxes, but the author of the article needs to fill in the gap and explain why there is a correlation/causation.

I don't mind paying for cops, firefighters, and department of environmental quality either. These are useful things that help me more than they cost to me personally and I would hesitate to argue that for nearly everyone this is true.
I wouldn't have believed it 3 years ago but now I can say from experience that anyone can do it if that's what they want to do. It's all a matter of hard work and willingness to live cheaply. The only thing that might tie you down is a family. I live for traveling so I've just worked my life to be able to do what I like. 3 years ago I was a law school dropout with no prospects and a monthly loan repayment of $1100. The highest paying job I qualified for was tutoring.

It's highly unlikely that "unused programs" are what's slowing your system down. What's far more likely is a bad hard drive. We're not talking about Windows here--you're not likely to have a bunch of rogue processes running in the background chewing up all of your processor time.
Open up Console.app and look through the logs. If you're running 10.5 or older, check /var/log/system.log. On 10.6, check /var/log/kernel.log. Look for something like this:
disk0s2: I/O error
That would be indicative of a failing hard drive.

If someone is going to specifically test disk read/write speeds then one needs to also look into and see if the SSD is the Toshiba or Samsung model. I for one have the Samsung model and scored higher on the disk test then his model.
+1 for at least testing a MBA with 4 gigs of ram.

A little off topic, but question for those who need Office software, and also run Parallels/Fusion: Do you prefer Office For Mac, or do you prefer to run "regular" Office in Parallels/Fusion? Thanks.
I used to run Office 2004 on Mac and Office 2003 on Parallels and much preferred Office 2003. The main issue was the ease of looking at the screen in Excel on the 2004 version - particularly how it highlighted (poorly) the cell you were in..
I have now upgraded to Office 2011 on Mac and now only use that. It is much improved. I won't be buying the Windows version.
