This could be really nice. A natural evolution for display on portable device. I hope it pans out sooner than later.

So, does anyone want to buy this option with their mac and I'll pay the $60 for both of them. Ok... $70 for your time and shipping. ;)
Well, lets see where would they put it? Between Mac Mini and iMac.... you know in that $200 difference. Or maybe between iMac and Pro Mac.... in that what $300 difference. It seems like the Mac Mini bump and iMac expansion have left no room in the line-up for another Mac. Even with conroes... all speeds, sizes, prices are covered. There isn't room for a Conroe Mac. Period.
Rubbish. There is a Jupiter sized gap in Apples product "matrix". They have no desktop for frig sake!

The iSight isn't up there either. Maybe it's getting axed.
I thought it was already being axed because it doesn't meet some environmental laws now....I think iSight will be integrated from now on.

A blog notes (http://blog.washingtonpost.com/securityfix/2006/08/hijacking_a_macbook_in_60_seco_1.html) that two hackers are demonstrating a security flaw in the Macbook's device driver that would allow them to "seize total control over the machine".
...this attack can be carried out whether or not a vulnerable targeted laptop connects with a local wireless network. It is, they said, enough for a vulnerable machine to have its wireless card active for such an attack to be successful.
Similar vulnerabilities have also been found in corresponding Windows wireless drivers but the two are demoing the vulnerability on the Mac due to Apple's recent advertising (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/05/20060501211004.shtml) on Mac OS X's security.
The vulnerability has not been described to be "in the wild", and the two have been in touch with Apple, Microsoft and other companies responsible for the drivers.

Apple's approval process aside - he was doing a pretty second rate job.

Frankly I don't know if Bluetooth would solve the wire problem. But your point is well taken a wireless drive would have its own advantages. Something would be needed of course as I'm not dismissing the need for an optical drive from time to time. My big problem with optical hardware is that it increases weight and decreases reliability.
One obvious answer would be a mini Wifi server of one or more CDROM's. That sort of arrangement would certainly have the bandwidth needed. In either case you are making use of radio technology so that in and of itself is a power issue. On the other hand if the drive isn't in the laptop it can never be a power burden.
In any event I still believe that Apple would be better off putting Compact Flash or other memory device slots in its machines. They are already a better choice than CDROM's for many uses and of special interest to photographers and other professionals. The goal should be reliable low power operation.
Dave
Is the bandwith of Bluetooth less than a CD or DVD reader?
It would be cool to have a bluetooth CD/DVD reader. If that worked it be so tight. No wires. And you could stack them and create a laptop with 5 optical drives. :p

No, it certainly isn't. It's proof that we're evolving (albeit, slowly).

ok thanks would you say wifi is the best or att&t wifi ??
Personally, I only get the wifi versions. I have no need for 3G data as I have wifi at home and watch movies, etc while in transit. There is wifi almost everywhere. Also, the data plans are pricey for what you get and the service is not up to par.

I like when Apple doesn't announce something, i like surprises.
One thing will Apple ever make a larger LCD display, or they will stay with the 30" for a while.
Seeing the iMac 24", instead of 23". Seems like Apple upto something.
Hopefully that something invovles isight/front row displays that are more reasonable in price.

What makes it a piece of ****, exactly? The issues it had early on that were fixed with the software update? It's much more superior in every way to the 3GS than the 3GS was to the 3.
Hmm. I thought I covered this already.
Well, the screen issues were definitely not fixed by a software update. So that's a no go. The proximity sensor issue may have, but if you read my post far back enough you will see I'm discuss why I didn't buy the iPhone 4 while it was new... and I won't buy it now because.. it's old.
Oh.. but I think the update you have in mind is where apple fixed their hardware folly with a software patch. Right. They adjusted the bars so you would actually have to be receiving little or no coverage to only display one bar.
Your right, forgot they fixed the antenna with a software band-aid.

Here's a quote for you
Avid,FCP7,Premiere,Vegas all have a viewer.
Now I know some people that don't use the viewer all that much and I know others that swear by it.
I myself have been using it less and less over time
But they can't even say it's dead or anything is missing, because the demo is so limited.
The images we see are limited ... and are showcasing new things... that doesn't mean one can't turn the viewer on.

Our country's cycle of support>arm>aid>turn against>support new group needs to stop, as it is directly responsible for much of the instability we've seen in the world over the last 20+ years.
American foreign policy has indeed come up quite short in the foresight department. However, Khadahphee (or however it gets spelt) rose to power with no real assistance from other countries and has only been supported indirectly, through people buying oil. The only support Libya gets from the US is indirect, from irresponsible excess in oil consumption that keeps the prices up for everyone.

Sigh, I dont like the way Apple configure models to get you to spend more to get features that should be standard.
512Mb RAM and a Combo Drive which probably costs them 50p

I just had my heatsink replaced last weekend, and I just now noticed the screw. Oh well...
Does your screw stick out a little bit or is it leveled with the plastic?

So do you have to be connected to an unknown network (like in a coffee shop or bookstore) for this to work?
I'm actually not in the city, so I don't have anyone around me that would be close enough to connect. Could it still work though?

Here's a question to ponder...How are people suppose to install this firmware if there macbooks keep shutting down?
Anyways, I reccomend people use this firmware instead of geting their heatsink replaced. The later option involves an ugly screw in the middle of your macbook.
At the next RSD, press the power button and don't let go until you hear a musical sound (maybe holding the button 4-5 second). Then when it reboots, it'll force the CUP to operate at 1GHz. And you won't get the shut down problem. This would probably be the best condition under which to do this firmware update. Good luck!

I would have a $97 billion surplus.
Raised the budget of NASA to $30 billion( I do believe manned space flight is important).
Made some small cuts to other organizations up until Defense. Reduced our Defense budget to $471 billion.
Pretty much halted any foreign military aid.
Reduced Education a bit.
Cut Justice a bit.
Cut housing programs a bit
Increased our transportation budget.
Increased taxes 5% for people making $30K to $100K. Raised taxes 10% for $100K to $500K. Increased taxes by 30% for making above $500K.
Increased the corporate income tax by 10%.
Create a Carbon tax that will increase energy cost by $6 a month. Increase alcohol tax to 25 cents per ounce and tax sugary drinks 1 cent per ounce.

If they build it from scratch, they could probably design the place with working conditions that don't make people as suicidal (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1104449&referrerid=51132).
Get off your holier-than-thou hobby horse. Your attempt at social comment is ludicrous and stupid. If you think so badly of Apple and its suppliers then sell your Apple products (if you even own any) and try to find something not made in the exact same factories by Foxconn.

i don't know why anyone is complaining that the MB wasn't upgraded to meet the specs of the MBP. we're talking entry level after all, and have to give apple something to justify the price differential to the pro. me, this is just what i was waiting for. c2d with added memory to boot. if i needed more features, graphics, etc., (*and if i could afford it) i'd buy the pro, but i don't. with this upgrade, i can finally retire my performa 6400/g3 sonnet, and have something that will serve me for many years. as soon as the store comes back up, i'm buying.
I am mostly complaining between the mismatch between the 1.83 and the 2.0 model in terms of what 200$ buy (512MB RAM, Double Processor Cache, HD space, Superdrive, Processor Speed).
They should have lowered the price of the 1.83 entry model to reflect how cripled it is. I can not see anybody considering it as a realistic choice.

While it can seem weird by todays standards... I think it's great to be able to critically listen to them as originally recorded to see what fantastic work and pioneers they were in the studio arena.
Good point, well made. :)
