because it's turned on by default. it should be off by default (IMO) and then turned on as an option. many people aren't aware that Facebook's new "features" are almost always on when rolled out.

It will only update if you allow it to use your location, and then after that only if you tap the places icon. It doesn't update your location automatically.

Anyone know when Comcast's real live streaming will happen? They still claim to have had the first "streaming" app, but all it is is a player for the crappiest crap nobody wants to see, and has no live TV options (even though they promised in then "early 2011" now overdue). I just realized. If AT&T and Comcast were a couple, the dishes would pile up, and the trash would never get taken out. They both are the biggest and yet set expectations and ignore any attempt of meeting them, haha

    Apple, please, make it right:

    - Smartphone.
    - Built-in Mac OS X mobile.
    - Wireless

That will make it the ultimate presentation tool with a huge halo effect on corporate, education and domestic markets:

    1. Make presentation on Mac or PC with Keynote or Powerpoint.

    2. Save the presentation to the iPhone.

    3. Use the iPhone as a wireless computerless presentation remote.

Wow! More here with great pictures:

    http://www.t3.co.uk/news/247/communications/mobile_phone/evidence_mounts_for_january_iphone

    http://www.t3.co.uk/nested_content/gallery_assetlisting_navigation?root=633162&result_page=3

I don't think any presentation features would be enought to cause any halo effect in the corporate market. Features that *could* cause a halo effect, on the other hand, are:

    - Using the iPhone as high-speed wireless modem, over Bluetooth (2.0 or even a new version), or Wi-Fi (maybe can enable "Internet Sharing" on phone)
    - Powerful email/messaging client to compete with Blackberry. They wouldn't really be competing with Blackberry, but they might strip away a few users that decide the email client is "good enough" and would like to have their iPod and phone in the same device...

What are people mainly using the Push for? I certainly wouldn't want to be updated every time one of my friends posts on Facebook... I know there are different settings - just wondering what kind of updates people use this for.

I don't get all the confusion people are having...

The push notifications just push your facebook.com notifications... the little red numbers at the bottom right of the screen. Those, including new messages in your inbox and event invites (which don't show up as badges because they don't show up as little red notifications in facebook.com to begin with.)

You don't receive a facebook.com notification whenever one of your hundreds of friends updates there status, so you won't receive a push notification on the facebook app either.

Look, this is the second time you've told me, incorrectly, what you think I believe.

"Informed people" is self-explanatory. I don't intend to spoon-feed you a response just so you can intentionally misrepresent it a third time.

What I'm trying to do is understand your logic. The reason I'm summarizing your position is because I want to avoid misrepresenting you before I go on to explain my own point of view. Please show me where I misrepresented you. This isn't a political debate. I am only asking questions because I actually want to know the answers, not because I'm trying to "win". If you look back on our posts, I don't think you'll find any point where I intentionally misrepresented your posts. The fact that you're reacting defensively is surprising to me.

Let's just forget it. It's my fault for expecting a rational conversation on a message board.

The American government taxes less and serves less than any other western industrialized country, while spending over a trillion dollars a year trying to control foreign affairs through military might.

That my friend, is a recipe for financial disaster.

    Have you been studying Mises?

So I am having my first surgical procedures in *looks at widget* 16 days, and the thing that scares me the most is the general anesthesia...

In actuality, general anesthesia may be more important than the skills of the surgeon. My most vivid memory of the anesthesia given for my hernia repair years ago was when the doctor told me to count backwards from 100.

I got down into the upper 40's and wondered if that was normal. Then I heard the doctor say, "This patient is considerably more resistant than most others ... let's increase the flow." I immediately had misgivings about agreeing to the surgery at that point.

I must have drifted off seconds later because the next thing I remembered was awakening in the recovery room. The procedure went smoothly and I've never had any problems since. I would not fret much over it. Best wishes on everything.

Are people overestimating Apple's motives? Could it perhaps not be a masterplan but just that the new motherboard, etc they are using just happens to have this component so it's been included? That could explain why it's hidden around the back. If being placed on the back is deliberate it could just be for aesthetics sake as ports on the front will look messy.

Entirely possible. If you look at this picture of the new Mini's logic board (http://s1.guide-images.ifixit.net/igi/eBGMrGURJuJjcmlh.huge) from iFixIt's teardown, it looks like the logic board is just wide enough at the front (right side of the board) of the housing to have accommodated the SD card slot. But it looks like it would have been at the expense of either growing the housing so an inserted card sat flush with it, or having the card stick out significantly (and asymmetrically) from the rounded corner.

I really don't get why people who come up with specs don't think ahead. When SD came out it has a 2GB limit. So they updated it, SDHC for a 32GB limit. Now they had to update it again, SDXC for a 2TB limit. They should have just designed the format to scale in the FIRST place.

For example: CompactFlash came out in like 1994 and has scaled all the way up to like 137GB, when the first cards were under 1MB.

Fair point. It could have been a cost-driven design decision to keep the cost of the driver silicon down, similar to those that drove the design of the original USB 1.0 specification.

    With regard to booting:
I think a lot of people in here are also looking over the fact that the card reader is on the USB bus. Meaning the speeds you'd be limited to would be that of USB 2.0. Internal 5400rpm boot drive would still be faster.

The card reader doesn't show up on the Mini's USB device tree in System Profiler, hence is not a USB device. The USB device tree lists every device that is currently enumerated on the bus.

I believe its part of the ethernet controller chip.

Correct. Looking at the BCM57765 block diagram, the SD card data is accessed via the PCI Express bus. The SMBus is several orders of magnitude too slow to handle 2.5GT/s, and is likely used for controlling the driver IC.

It's not the first time that the Vietnamese got their hands on an unreleased iPhone. The question is why? It's not like that Vietnam has anything to do with anything.

These guys, from what i've seen from them so far, are quite reliable.

    IMO, maybe anonymity purposes?
If it's in the Chinese hand then it's probably the hardware mfgr's leak.
If the US then employee's leak.

Exacly what a friend of mine said when he got his new macbook and found out he needed to buy new adapters since in the 3 years they removed many (such as the analogue audio ports)

I don't understand this. Could you or someone explain this to me please?

Jobs called this 'Word processing with an amazing sense of style', indicating that it's a word processor la Word. It's not. It's a basic DTP application

Agree! I don't think one should talk about Pages and Word as if they were in the same genre.

4S. I like the name, and it makes sense to keep continuity with the previous naming scheme (3GS). I guess we'll see a true iPhone 5 next summer. But then they would have to call it the iPhone 6.
