Every update I see people come on Apple Discussions claim that the update fried their computer. Nothing can be farther from the truth. Without certain precautions data corruption, directory issues, font issues, incompatible drivers, will make an update look bad on the surface. That's why I wrote this FAQ to prevent most upgrade problems. Please everyone take a look at it before you upgrade and decide for yourself when you are ready and finished with those precautions:

Hats off to everyone for keeping this up and running.

Actually Dale - hats off to you for resurrecting the challenge. While I enjoy many of the threads in MR, this is by far the one of greatest interest to me. Taking on a challenge and working to achieve it in an image; getting specific feedback from others ... these are invaluable. Thanks much.
Now to figure out "beauty in unexpected places". this one is, for me, a much harder concept. At least, to do so without being cliche.

Greedy content distributors.
Surely they want more money.
I think I am going to have to agree with you on this one. I have a snarkly feeling they are going to want to re-negotiate their contract to include money's from this now!

Trump is basically the male version of Palin, so I don't want him anywhere near the whitehouse. He's way too far to the right, and I'm pretty sure he would totally mess up the country if he somehow was elected.
I think Palin is a hell of a lot better than Trump and Palin is very bad.

Update away. Those of you running illegal copies of the WWDC (torrent) will be happy to know that your IP and other system/contact info is automatically logged and forwarded to Apple Legal by the Leopard Software Update.
"Enjoyed the preview? Good. We'll be contacting you soon..."
yeah, it would only cost them $1000+ to have someone come round to my house and do something about it, well worth the 59 they would sell the end product for
do they check everybodys IP, how do they know i wasn't at wwdc.

Um.. All of that looks the same. I really don't see many changes since Snow Leopard Server.. I will feel relieved as long as everything is still there. It all works pretty well once you know what you're doing.
I don't want to have to switch back to linux server admin... that's a nightmare.
More or less OSX server has always just been normal OSX with some server bits thrown in. Most of the packages are just open source unix/linux programs with a GUI on top.
You can install Apache and configure it yourself on a normal OSX install but.. I prefer the GUI rather then sort through httpd.conf in nano or vi.

it is strange that they added a fourth band (VIII - 900 frequency) which is for more of europe, asia and also vodaNZ but doesn't open up anything in the US... even stranger is that i was just in NZ and my 3G[S] (which doesn't support VIII / 900 apparently) was on the vodaNZ 3G network the whole time. anyone with knowledge of this whole UMTS / HSDPA band and frequency thing, please tell me how this worked then?
answer this myself... apparently they use I / 2100 as well.

I doubt its a feature we will see on any future versions of Mac OS X.
It isn't happening on login, as there is a picture and a quicktime movie being opened as it is all happening.
And see how everything is coming in from off the screen.
It looks like some sort of animation they have made as a demonstration, not something they have done with the actual OS.
But it certainly is interesting, and the shadow effect is very cool.

This is a real surprising trend for Apple products, I cannot recall such deep discounts on the "old" model of anything in the past. I have an iPad1 and was planning to sell it and get an iPad2. But the "value" of both just when south by 40% to 50%.
What I mean is - I can't be the only one thinking if I wait until the iPad3 comes along I'll be able to grab an iPad2 for 40% off.
I have to wonder what Apple is planning to prevent this from happening next year?
this happens for most of their products actually. go check out microcenter for the previous gen macbook pro. only $899.
when the 1st gen iphone came out we got those for $299 no contract etc.

Understood, but there is no "Pro" version of this new one, so I'm not sure where you were going with that. The Slim design isn't going to trickle down to the other models?

One note: according to John Gruber (http://daringfireball.net/linked/2011/02/24/lion):
you need to specify the machine as a server when you install the OS its not a switch you can flip later on

OK I'm doing the Macs category, Pre G3 Macs have a separate category, as do the PowerMac G4 models as there are so many articles on them.

Oh my, what a conundrum for the fan boys. On one hand, CR loves the iPad and Apple's customer service but on the other hand, we have the iPhone 4. :D
I don't know if I qualify as a "fan boy" or not... I love technology, Apple just happens to have been the leader for a long time. Anyway, I'm not a fan of CR's criteria regardless of what they recommend. Even a broken clock is right twice a day.

Let's see...
Most successful desktop operating system: Microsoft Windows.
Most successful server operating system: Microsoft Windows Server.
Most successful office suite: Microsoft Office.
Three good reasons (and there would be more like Exchange Server, Sharepoint Portal, SQL Server, Visual Studio) to also have confidence in the man if he were hired as a product manager.
Like it or not, Microsoft still is the most IMPORTANT software company around, and they don't hire incompetent idiots either.
Winni.... you are right... they do not hire idiots. Well... maybe some... one in particular comes to mind. :)
Microsoft may have the most successful OS and other things, but they are living on their past and lack vision from the top. MS is quickly making themselves less relevant in the market place. Without better vision, they may become the Kodak of software.
