I have an 06 Mac Pro that was in need of a video card upgrade. The unit came with a Nvidia 7300GT and I bought an ATI Radeon HD 2600XT to add to it. I have the ATI Radeon on lane 1 so it will get the full X16 and put the 7300GT on lane 4 to drive my second monitor so it will get x8 instead of x4 on another slot. My question is, the 7300GT sits with the heatsink nearly touching the hard drives above it, does this cause overheating issues with the card at all? If so should I move the card to another slot? This would either give me x4 on the 7300GT or I could configure the slots to give x8 each, but that wouldn't allow the 2600XT to run at x16 full performance. Another question, running 2 separate cards for each monitor would give me better performance if I use the better card for graphic intensive apps/games than driving both monitors off the 2600XT correct?

    Hmm...

I wasn 't buying any of the in depth analysis people were making over the New Year splash, but now...

We can be pretty sure the two images represent colours and styles involved in a new theme - whether that theme is simply a logo for iTV (most likely), Leopard (still pretty likely) or an iPhone/new iPod (unlikely, just because... it doesn't look very relevant) is unknown.

    I hope it's Leopard tbh. I couldn't give a sht about iTV.

    $20 discount? BFD!

That doesn't impress anybody, much less educators.

For buying 10, the discount should be $100 per unit. Buy 100, $125 off per unit.

Well that would explain a lot. :D

But seriously though, it's not that much that is missing from .mac to make it worth the $99 without regrets.

    Like:

    - fully editable web calendar
    - fully editable address book
    - spam management
    - more storage (2GB would be sufficient)
    - make the Finder fast so iDisk is actually usable
    - web editable blog synched back to iWeb
    - possibility to show subscribed iCals in web interface without having to visit their site
    - integrate stickies into .mac and synch them

With those things, that would be fairly easy to do I don't think a lot of people would complain anymore.

And it's not really something completely new, just evolution of the existing.

    Agreed!

I tried the new .macmail on my G3/500 iMac this morning, and surprise, surprise, it was horribly slow. At this this morning on my XP box in FF2.0, the UI cooks along nicely. The server updates are slower than I'd like.

Get the calendar fully integrated online and I'd probably use my .mac email more than my gmail account.

OFFTOPIC: Firefox 2.0 has a new feature of spell checking what you are typing in any web window! This makes up for .mac's lack of on the fly spell checking which is great for me at work in the XP world.

Thanks Apple, you are getting much closer to justifying the .mac cost!

    http://www.macrumors.com/images/macrumorsthreadlogo.gif (http://www.macrumors.com/iphone/2009/11/05/why-an-rfid-enabled-iphone/)

Multiple reports have come in that Apple is researching (http://www.macrumors.com/2009/11/05/apple-experimenting-with-rfid-enabled-iphone-prototypes/) RFID (http://www.macrumors.com/2009/07/09/new-apple-iphone-patent-applications-surface-object-and-facial-recognition-messaging-voice-modulation/) integration (http://www.macrumors.com/2009/07/02/haptic-feedback-fingerprint-identification-and-rfid-tag-readers-in-future-iphones/) into the iPhone, but some may still be wondering what such functionality would bring to the table for consumers.

Firstly, we should note that RFID is a catch-all term that describes a vast array of technologies and standards. RFID tags can be relatively large and battery-powered, such as ones used in toll collection, to small "passive" tags that can be embedded into credit cards, drivers licenses (called "Enhanced Drivers Licenses" in the U.S.), passports, or stuck onto a piece of merchandise.

Currently, cell-phone usage of RFID technology is centered around Near Field Communication (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Near_Field_Communication) (NFC). NFC has three main usage scenarios: a phone acting as an RFID tag; a phone acting as an RFID reader; and peer to peer communication (P2P).

In RFID tag mode, a phone could be used as a payment device (like a credit card), an identity card, or act as a car key. In RFID reader mode the phone would be able to interact with tags in its vicinity. This article and video (http://www.nearfield.org/2009/04/iphone-rfid-nfc) demonstrates how an iPhone with RFID could use physical objects to control media playback. And in P2P mode, Bluetooth pairing can be streamlined.

These are just a few ways that RFID could be used in an iPhone. When or if it becomes a reality isn't clear, but hopefully now you have a better idea of what the potential is for Apple's research in this area.

Article Link: Why an RFID-enabled iPhone? (http://www.macrumors.com/iphone/2009/11/05/why-an-rfid-enabled-iphone/)

I must say its a great respond from Macrumors team. Many people, including me:D, where wondering what that technology is about. Now I am getting picture.
I think RFID is step forward and good approach from Apple. I understand people's distrust for this technology but if its done properly it can be timesaver in daily tasks.

Do these companies really want people to pay for the same content twice? Surely they can't realistically expect to a get premium for viewing in the same location but just through a different medium?

Sadly, this doesn't surprise me at all.

There can be many valid reasons for refusing service to some people.

Exactly. Like they're racists who disrespect your minority employees.

That's an excellent reason to tell a customer to take a hike.

I'll say it again. You are incorrect.
robbieduncan is right-on with his explanation, you're making incorrect claims: focal lengths are independent of the size of the sensor, a 50 mm lens will be a 50 mm lens on a medium format body, a full frame analog body or an APS-C-sized dslr. What changes is the field of view, which is an angle. It is this angle which is different on the above-mentioned cameras. The reason why people write something to the effect `a 50 mm lens on a crop body is equivalent to 75~80 mm lens on a full frame body' is that we've gotten used to associating focal lengths on 35 mm bodies to FOVs. Sort of like Americans got used to measuring distances in miles rather than kilometers.

:) Asking is clearly worth a shot. What's the worst that can happen ... being told that going for coffee is okay, but no new discs are being allowed in her Superdrive for the forseeable future? It might help if you have a letter from Steve approving of this.

Misleading headline, if it weren't for the question mark. The article seems like an ad for Symantec. The author begins by refuting the "NSFW" assertion but then ends saying that Symantec might offer a good solution.

Headset jack was removed from the Mac? Since when? New Mac laptops have combined headset/microphone jack.

That article contains some errors. Shipping rates, for instance, are about the same as they were in 2008 and similar to 2002 so that is a red herring.

I would also question you as to why you think that China is an enemy? They appear to be more like a partner in a symbiotic relationship. You need each other.

    Good points.

I think even though China is a legitimate partner, they are also a competitor and right now they seem to be doing better than the USA. Judging from their increased output, and also with quality going up on many items, if the public buys Chinese goods and keep on coming back, they deserve the business.

I don't see China as a military enemy like the other poster here does. China has far too much invested in the USA both in real estate/stocks, and in customers in the west to be stupid enough to pick a fight with us. Heck, China is slowly owning us so there's no fear of any military surprises there.

If anything, if the real cold war was about capitalism vs. communism, we are the winners since our capitalistic way of life has more than rubbed off on China and they stopped their isolationism and have to trade with the non-communist countries in order to survive. They have made their entire economy dependent on us as customers. The only pure communist country I can think of these days is North Korea and they are hanging on by a thread. So the conversion of China into what is in every way a capitalist nation is a trade I am willing to make if the cost is losing business here in the USA. I would hate to think if they were still run by Mao and viewed us as a military enemy. Also imagine what it would be like if they were dedicated communists like North Korea.

Instead of coming out with new applications, I would prefer that Adobe put more of an effort into developing an Intel-Mac version of PhotoShop just a bit sooner than Spring of 2007. I've been delaying buying a new Mac until the new CS3 is available. Doesn't make much sense to buy a new computer, when the application that you use the most runs better on the old one!

I work for a large telecom company and was installing home internet service for a customer that had an iPhone. When I asked if he wanted me to set up his wifi for him he said sure. When I looked at it the top right hand corner said T-mobile. I looked at the phone and said to myself T-Mobile? Then just carried on. So now looking at this article makes me think that they are actually testing it on their network. I don't know what to think of it actually.

Carrier logos on the iPhone are in the top left corner. As a forum newbie I will tell you folks around here are sticklers for having your facts straight. You didn't see anything special ... Just an unlocked iPhone on T-mobile just like the one I have had since 2007!

First of all, i don't know how legit this is, but for argument sake let the OP be true.

I can see Apple giving the developers of Infinity Blade and Real Racing an iPhone with the A5 chip. Is it the iPhone 5? No. It's just an iPhone 4 + A5 chip.

The actual iPhone 5 will have much more features. Apple always does this, because at the end of the day they're a business and they will add features which they omitted from iPhone 4. To get everyone to upgrade.
I think iPhone 5 is Apple's top secret atm, hence we're barely hearing anything about it and it'll be May in a couple weeks.

If the iPhone 5 is to be launched in September, then it'll probably have killer features or else it makes no sense right?

I highly doubt Apple will call the next phone, iPhone 4S. It makes no sense.

    iPhone = iPhone 1
    iPhone 3G = iPhone 2
    iPhone 3GS = iPhone 3
    iPhone 4 = iPhone 4
    iPhone 4S = iPhone 5 ?
    iPhone 5 = iPhone 6 ?

see what i mean? They'll probably stick to iPhone 5, or they'll adapt Roman Numerals.

    Now, regarding LTE/4G.
Majority of America isn't ready for LTE, forget about the world. So I don't understand the need of it for this year's iPhone revision, but it makes sense for 2012.
What will you be extracting from the cloud that will require LTE? Will you be rendering 3D models on the cloud or something?

I dont know, when I look at that white iphone. it has that unusual ridge around the edge like so many clones. The black iphone does not have a ridge around its edge. Why would the white one? i don't know, there is so much speculation around this new iphone 5 and the white iphone. Who knows what to believe! :)

I think that Apple is doing a much better effort at protecting its assets. Keep in mind what happened a certain software giant (who's name will be omitted but is known for making a poor rip-off of the Mac operating system) got away with stealing from Apple...
