You can't assume this will be used for SIPR. What about all the unclassified computers and devices? Our base has been fiddling around with some wifi lately. I don't know if we'll actually get it (doubt it) but it's a possibility.

And the Army in particular has been working on real, secure, Wi-Fi for years. Their intent is to have very hardened, approved, encryption to deliver secure data over a Wi-Fi type network to get data into mobile devices.

The Laffer Curve makes sense. You find a balance and you have taxes that are low enough not to hinder the economy and high enough to fund the government. I really don't understand where this "keep lowering taxes" logic comes from. It certainly has nothing to do with the Laffer Curve.

The Laffer Curve is often referenced, but you're correct about it's actual meaning. Some conservatives have taken the Curve to mean that lowering taxes will always bring about more revenue. Something this article is trying to address.

I wasn't making that argument so I guess I was confused why it was brought up. I've only been making an argument that the article can't conclude cutting taxes resulted in the budget problem. A state may have cut taxes and their economy might not have improved since cutting taxes, but the author of the article needs to fill in the gap and explain why there is a correlation/causation.

Negative correlation is very difficult to prove, but the article was merely noting that lowering taxes does not make for a rising economy. Obviously, we'd look to see if raising taxes improved the economy, and we might try to use some statistical methods to identify correlation.

What's important is that many conservative politicians have been selling low taxes as a fix for state budgetary problemsWisconsin is a good examplewithout acknowledging that such measure often don't work, especially in the short-term.

I propose that you could run a state with some income tax or no income tax if the budget was made competently. So, IMO, cutting taxes does not, in and of itself, mean it has caused a budget shortfall. I personally think cutting taxes does help the economy but that's not what is at issue here.

In the short-term, lowering taxes just takes money from the state purse and does not drive new economic development. In the mid-term and long-term, lower taxes may encourage growth, but there's not a direct connection between taxation and economic development. They are orthogonal elements.

I have only a general understanding of the theories those guys you mentioned are famous for. I think Austrian economics make much more sense. A theory of how to get the maximum tax dollars out of the people is irrelevant to me. It's like studying how much blood you can drain from people while keeping them alive. My preferred income tax rate is 0.

For the Red Cross, knowing that fact is infinitely useful. For government, some tax is necessary to maintain infrastructure, pay for public safety, and encourage a social society. The complicated part is how to get some money without adversely affecting the entire society.

I don't mind paying taxes because I like good roads, working sewers, and schools. I also like national parks, museums and libraries. I don't mind paying for cops, firefighters, and department of environmental quality either. These are useful things that help me more than they cost to me personally and I would hesitate to argue that for nearly everyone this is true.

I wouldn't have believed it 3 years ago but now I can say from experience that anyone can do it if that's what they want to do. It's all a matter of hard work and willingness to live cheaply. The only thing that might tie you down is a family. I live for traveling so I've just worked my life to be able to do what I like. 3 years ago I was a law school dropout with no prospects and a monthly loan repayment of $1100. The highest paying job I qualified for was tutoring.

    We should talk.

I've traveled a lot and I'm hoping to do more once my son is a bit older.

I shop at Target all the time for DVDs, iTunes selling those movies is not going to change this.
Maybe not for you, but it will for me, and probably a lot of other folks as well.

Once I have a decent method of getting my movies from my computer to my TV (i.e. iTV), and iTunes has more selection, I plan on never buying another DVD again. I'm in the minority here I'm sure, but for how long? How long before digital distribution is the method of choice for your average Joe?

My point is that their (Wal-Mart/Target) concerns are valid, but they're still just whining about it because they're scared of competition. Why isn't Wal-Mart whining and complaining about the Music Store? Oh... That's right, because they have one of their own.

    You wish! I'm staying put.

My comment merely points out the sad fact that Harper and his cronies now have free reign to sell off Canada and Canadians to the highest bidder (or corporate donor) all thanks to the sheeple who live here.

"The case against democracy is a 5 minute conversation with the average voter."

$18B surplus to $50B deficit . . .. yeh great job "real" conservatives.

We voted in criminals who flaunt the law, democracy and parliament. There are rocks smarter than us.

And the world is full of computer super users like us?

If they do it through the App Store it will be a download that you double click and it will either:

    A. Make a partition it can book off (AKA restore partition - not a fan personally, i'd delete mine after installation if they did this).
    B. Ask for a USB stick or DL-DVD to be written to to allow installation normally.

It will be a minimal click affair. Steps: Where do you want it installed from, enter your password, get a cup of tea.

Once that step is over it will continue as the DVD would one it has restarted.

When developers download and install Lion from the App Store, it does create a recover partition. No need to burn it to a disk or restore to USB, but of course you can if you want.

I would gladly pay a $15 premium to get Lion on a flash drive. DVD-based installs are just too slow and painful.

Gotta love the old dinosaurs, they never want to adapt to new technologies...

Who cares if its being shown on a TV or an iPad? Obviously the iPad app owner must be a cable subscriber to view the content, so its paid for.

Not only that but it's as-if they are completely unaware that Slingbox has been around for years. I get they may not want people to be able to "double dip" but the Slingbox apps prevent that so no reason TWCs can't as well.

2011. People are still watching TV? Scary.

2011. People are still wasting their time leaving snarky non-sequitur comments on web forums to prove to themselves they are a superior being? Scary.

    Hmm...

I wasn 't buying any of the in depth analysis people were making over the New Year splash, but now...

We can be pretty sure the two images represent colours and styles involved in a new theme - whether that theme is simply a logo for iTV (most likely), Leopard (still pretty likely) or an iPhone/new iPod (unlikely, just because... it doesn't look very relevant) is unknown.

    I hope it's Leopard tbh. I couldn't give a sht about iTV.

Because you do contracts for the Department of the Navy does not mean you know everything. Also there is more tax dollars going to waste every DAY with the current administration.

Trust me I served for 21 years and saw waste fraud and abuse, and there aint a dam thing your going to do, as soon as you blow the whistle your career is down the toilet and that is active duty personnel and the civilian workers also.

This about sums it up to the OP you are replying to here. I've been in for 6 years (a bit less than you obviously) but I do concur.

Yay! More cash from adapters for apple!

I support this if it's the next ipod sync cable but I'm with you if they have YET ANOTHER useless cable design that serves no point in the first place.

HDMI isn't even that big! There's even a micro version on pocket cameras for crying out loud.

What's wrong with blending Thunderbolt into the design of the USB 3.0? Less confusing for people and keeps the tech rolling. Everyone isn't gonna know what the difference is anyway. They only care that their thumb drive works with the new version and that it's faster.

Honestly, Macrumors, because of all the talk of a Apple-Google war, THIS story is more worthy of page 1 status than a story about executives selling stock (http://www.macrumors.com/2010/03/26/apple-executives-cash-in-over-1-million-shares-of-apple-stock/) OR the story that uses the word 'Unsurprisingly' (http://www.macrumors.com/2010/03/26/ipad-unsurprisingly-registering-most-popular-with-affluent-young-adults-already-owning-apple-products/) right in the headline.

I think there are some clues in the Dev build that point the way to the kind of 'cool' you allude to. While the face of the OS is the same for now, Apple has put the parts in place to either A) pop a new level of GUI goodness into 10.5 or B) allow developers to do it themselves.
The key to all this is Core Animation, which may end up being the biggest announcement at WWDC this year. Core Animation enhancements to the application Help menu, for example, indicate a totally new GUI direction. Floating 3D arrows point out features as you browse them with your mouse. The Time Machine interface similarly shows there are a lot of new and interesting GUI possibilities thanks to Core Animation.
I don't remember... Is Core Animation based on OpenGL?

Probably just terrible manufacturing, different moulds, etc. That could definitely be a contributor. But hey, I'm not a manufacturer. Just speculating! :D

My main purpose in commenting though is to say congrats to Apple on the management of the event, especially the policing of the queue. It was good to see they dealt with pushing in because, let's face it, they get the same money whether you push or not.

There was one security guy with a shaved head who was excellent although I think he spent most of his time down the other end of the queue. One of the security guys at the front was really nice too but was a bit overwhelmed due to the number of people. There was an Apple guy at the front who was a bit rubbish though and let people in. The queuing was *really* bad at the front. People were pushing in and got away with it at five to six. One guy even barged in at exactly six o'clock.
Apple apparently couldn't get permission to use barriers from the council - probably because they left it so late to announce when Leopard would be in stores. We (everyone at the front) were *extremely* disappointed with the shocking organisation of the queues. The first 20m or so of the queue was about 4 people wide. The inner two had been there since about 4 while the outer two had queue jumped in at great annoyance to everyone else at about ten to six and the staff did nothing. This is the reason why some of you didn't get t-shirts. We tried complaining and arguing but to no avail. :(
