No one is saying that they want to do whatever the heck they want. The developers are saying they want to distribute their applications themselves without Apple having to Approve them. Sure, you can distribute applications on the store. It's a great thing. But you should ALSO have the choice to download an application from the internet from a companies website.
The "wankers down in Australia" are running jailbroken phones and clearly didn't read the farking directions. You do that, serves you right to have your phone infected with a worm.
But no one is saying everyone should have complete control over the phone. They're saying they want to distribute the applications themselves if they so choose to.
Palm and Android both allow this if I recall.
there was a thing last week where tweetdeck's new app was pulled because it crashed constantly. most of the problems with Windows over the last 20 years have been third party apps and drivers and not the OS itself, yet MS got the blame. Apple learned a lesson from that. it took MS years to change the architecture to limit bad code from developers

And this is one of the big reasons why I'm doubting this rumor about LTE.
The technology on the carrier end of things is still nascent, at best. I don't think Apple would invest lots of time and money to launch technology that would be barely functional upon launch.
I had always assumed that the 2012 iteration of the iPhone would be the very first to have LTE because that would give both the carriers and Apple enough time to work out the kinks.
I think it's vastly more probable that bloggers are becoming antsy about the lack of verifiable iPhone rumors compared to this time last year. Apple has probably tightened up their leaks and speculators are left on the sidelines throwing out inconsistent theories.
I'm still betting that we see a modest bump the iPhone 4's specs, the white version, and increased storage capacity and this will be the iPhone 5.
Thank you! Finally some sense.
AT&T doesn't even have LTE deployed yet. They say on the official At&t FAQ (http://www.wireless.att.com/answer-center/main.jsp?t=solutionTab&ft=&ps=solutionPanels&locale=en_US&_dyncharset=UTF-8&solutionId=KB115944) that LTE will start being deployed by the middle of 2011. Even if Apple waited until September the LTE would just be getting started and the coverage would be too lacking.

WW1 was another silly European power struggle which we were pulled into. It isn't as if there was any nation I would call the "bad guys" in WW1. It was just a stupid squabble over resources and power.
True, but the Germans were attacking our ships, killing our citizens, etc. I don't think the Germans would have been, " Ok, we'll stop" if we asked really nicely. Like I said, those ships were carrying weapons, but they were supposed to let the men get off before sinking it. They failed to do that.
The revolutionary war was necessary if you assume that the USA being its own sovereign nation is a particularly important thing. This is not a belief to which I subscribe, in my eyes the revolutionary war is more an example of an upstart colony being expected to work with its parent nation and deciding that it didn't feel like it (much like an 8 year old child). The motivations behind our separation from the British empire was basically "we don't want to pay taxes, also were miffed about you selling us tea cheaper than we could buy it from smugglers :confused:".
If the will of colonies wanted to be there own country and want to govern themselves, sure it is important. The issue with the taxes was not that they didn't want to pay taxes, but had no representation when Britain implemented the taxes upon the colonies. Hence the saying, " No taxation without representation".

Why so many negatives, I love 3D stuff when it's done correctly. Lots of fun in my opinion. Though I really doubt Apple would put a 3D screen on the iPad.

BTW - All the iphones in iPhone commercials are very different than my iPhone. They show a small little photo of the person calling instead of a big full screen photo. Don't know why. It's the same in this ad.
Actually, you can have the photo of the person you are calling show up either way (small as in the ad you are talking about) OR like you currently have (large, taking up the whole screen). Here's how. I will be using your "friend" Bob as an example of the person you want to have a picture show up on your iPhone:
To make it show up small, add the photo of Bob in your Address book contact list by cutting and pasting the image directly into the photo icon spot in Address Book. This will show up only as a small picture when Bob calls (as seen in the ads).
To make it show up large, have a picture of Bob in your photos that will sync up with your iPhone OR just take a picture of Bob with your iPhone. Now assign this photo of Bob as your contact photo.

I doubt a new MBP announcement will hurt the iPad in any way. I think only an inconsequential percentage of Apple's iPad customer base would change plans for an iPad and choose a MBP instead.
I agree, but that's not the point. Steve put his face on this product. It's still very unknown as to how it will fare. He doesn't want the distraction that the MBPs would cause.
Also, current MBPs seem (I don't have any numbers other than their quarterly report) to be selling at a high rate. As much as we want the updates, to Apple, there's no exigency.

Hackers rank up there with drug dealers as the scum of the earth. Pathetic, cocky wastes of human life. And no - there's no way you can convince me otherwise and I know I'm not in the minority on this one.
Side Note: Of course I'm talking about the ones who release their stuff into the wild and don't just notify the software company about the problem and keep it to themselves (those are good people and should be commended - it's the other ones that are a waste of flesh)

I'm well aware that the majority of people are going to get Vista when they buy new machines next year or so, but which of these versions are they going to get?
Very likely home platinum, possibly professional if they are buying a expensive high end machine.
MS has spread their lineup to thin, $500 for the ultimate every 5-10 years, I would rather got the apple route, $130 for the entire thing every few years and at least I feel continues advances than one big bang.

Battery Life, build quality, customer support...all big things. That said, I agree with the core of Nykwil's argument. The Apple Tax has gotten out of control. Im tired of Toshiba/Dell/HP making systems with far superior specs, at 30% less than Apple. That doesnt stop the masses from buying MB's and showing Apple "we* dont know the difference".
*MacRumors' Members exception
Toshiba currently builds Superior computers then apple. The reason apple gets away with its inflated price is the idea of running Mac OS being worth more.
Macs are decent PCs but I tend to stick with the KING of computers. ASUS. Their sells are not on that less but its in those computers wink wink.

does anyone else feellike the ipod needs to be quicker? some times it takes like five to ten seconds for it to start playing songs of movies, maybe the interface is so simple that i tell it what to do too fast and get ahead of it? also if you listen to music and browse your pics some times the music skipps. maybe the nvidia chips will cure this?

Given the cpu usage problems on new iMacs attributed in part to Flash, its a good thing Apple does not allow this resource hog onto the iPhone or your batteries would last 20 minutes! Adobe or Apple has to address the technical problems with Flash before it can be used on the iPhone or replace it with a different technology because as it is now, Flash is a bag of hurt on all Apple platforms.

this made my day. little things like this go a long way for a companies user base. Reminds me of Pixar's stint for a little girls dying request to see the movie (http://www.justpressplay.net/movies/movie-news/5530-pixar-grants-dying-10-year-olds-wish-to-see-qupq-before-she-dies.html)

"Randy Ubillos, who did the demo, added more features ..."
Great, That's the guy who "redesigned" iMovie and screwed it up. I'll bet he was partially responsible for the "improved" (sic) iPhoto 11 as well.
I'll reserve judgement until this hits the streets.

Woot!
Existing line upgraded
New size addition
Price drop
Solid approach by Apple. Looks like I am one step closer to getting my family (parents 60+) to switch. Man that will make my iLife :D so much easier.
C'mon 17" iMac refurbs for $899.

That thread Spook posted is hilarious! Man we're so many people 100% wrong with their opinions... the iPod owns the world now! I wasn't a fan of Apple back when the iPod was introduced, so I didn't have any expectations. I didn't even know it was coming. But now I sit here with both my 3G 30GB and 5G 60GB iPods on my desk. :D

HTC and LG have the factory space to try and compete, so they do.
Nintendo makes products for 6 year old girls.
Apple is not interested in what is today known as "3D" which is just two out of focus images hurting your eyes.
Thank you for mentioning the "3D" issue.
It gives people head aches and I feel really ripped off at the movie theaters, when they charge for these glasses, that you theoretically could keep and use again and again etc.
But...........we know why they $ell them.

They say you are NOT supposed to use the old battery but instead remove it live off the power adaptor which sucks for me! But much better than burns you know where!$#@#!
The odds of the thing blowing up on your are slim. How many laptops have actually blown up? Not as many as some people think. All these companies are just trying to cover their asses and avoid lawsuits.

No iMac Ultra!!!

*snuffle*
Maybe tomorrow? Can only hope. They can't not update the iMac forever...
BTW. I don't think many people expected the Mac Pro to be quite that awesome. FOUR slots that support graphics cards??? WOOHOO! And how many people doubted the quad 3Ghz? A lot, I know you're out there. Eight 30" screens??? That's INSANE!
If this is what Apple bring out for their Mac Pro, my standards for iMac Ultra have now changed.
30" HD screen, 2x SLI X1900's (do they make gig x19's? If they do, they'll be in it) and the 3.2 Ghz C2DE. The new Macbook Pro will surelly get a single x1900, and a 2.67 C2D. Maybe a 19" version? The former still less than 4G, the second less than 5G ($AU).
Both with an overdrive function that overclocks both CPUs and GPUs by a factor of 2. After all, if this beast can dissipate 300W in just graphics cards, let alone 160W of CPU power, plus four high performance hard disks, power supply, etc, etc, etc, surelly my expectations aren't too high...
Sounds reasonable to me after meeting the one true beast.

Please bear in mind that Apple were still selling the iPhone 3G in May last year, less than a year ago!
I hear you, but keep in mind, most phone manufacturers don't offer any updates. New phones come out every 3 to 5 months for many manufacturers and are abandoned as soon as they hit the street.
Think of the Nexus One, the first Google branded phone. Less than a year old and can be considered ancient and outdated. Did it get any Android updates? I don't know, but it's highly unlikely that it will get Android 2.3 (if it even has 2.2). Phones, even as fancy as they are, are disposable goods designed to last at best a year. That folks can still be mostly happy with an iPhone 3G or even an iPhone 2G would be absurd from any other phone manufacturer.
Don't get me wrong, I think the iPhone has plenty of flaws. I would just lean towards the "The iPhone is the worst phone out there. Except for all the other phones..."

And don't have a single 12/13in model in existence? I don't think so.
Some people want small form factors. It's a shame Apple thinks form factors and power are in a 1-to-1 relationship. Some people want powerful laptops with smaller displays (12in PB is no more) or less powerful laptops with larger displays (15in iBook is no more). Hopefully Apple learns to stop limiting themselves in this way. Think differently differently.
wow , talk about completely missing a joke... wow.
