I just bought a used 160GB iPod Classic last week. Having my entire music library in my car at all times: Priceless.

same thing here, but replace weeks with months.

i wish they'd come out with a cheaper deal made to interface with car stereos that has no screen, but hundreds of gigs of space. no inputs even. just a rest button and usb connector.

off switch or not, you have to realize that the more companies will be manufacturing 3D devices, the more companies will create 3D content for these devices

    it's a crappy circle...

Who cares if someone creates 3D content for a device? Again, explain the negative here? How does this hurt you as a 2D viewer. Unless they start making 3D only content, your experience should not change.

As much as I don't like 3D stuff being shoved down my face, I also like the choice of being able to view something in 3D, rather than not having the choice at all.

I find it strange how there's so much angst against something that is completely optional to the user. That's like me being annoyed someone else is able to turn on Bluetooth.

I like the "Job's Pulling Technique" - whip out iPod, insert ear-buds into lasses ear, adopt hopeful grin and hope she doesn't slap you!

Sounds like a typical weekend night-out in a valley's town. Sans iPod, of course.

    ;)

Ironic that FACEBOOK is one of websites that most OFTEN CRASHED Safari 4.0.3!

I'm not sure who's to blame for that, Apple or Facebook, but since many other websites don't crash Safari 4.0.3, doesn't this seem like the little stubborn child refusing to do his homework properly?

Btw, I've yet to extensively test Safari 4.0.4 on Facebook, but my past experience was that Facebook has always been buggy on Macs, and every new update to the site always seems to cause a Mac-specific problem.

And recently with Safari 4.0.3, it was crashing Safari 3 times a week.
Other websites were crashing Safari 4.0.3 too, mostly those that were Javascript or FLASH intensive, but Facebook was one of the worst offenders.

I'm anxious to see how Safari 4.0.4 does, so far so good as far as crashes on any website (knocks on wood). :)

Android Phone Specs are out pacing the Iphone. An 8 Megapixel camera, bigger screen and more memory will keep me buying. IOS 5 with the rumored adobe flash would be great too.

where was Flash rumored for iOS 5?

You make some great points and I think the key to a successful reduction in military spending is to reduce it over time. A sudden 30-50% cut in the budget would be horrific and not just for a military program but in any program. But why not aim to reduce it from 600 billion today, to 400 billion fifteen years from now? The key is discipline but such a trait is not something I have seen Washington demonstrate. :(

I'll agree with this. In fact, it's such a good idea that we should adopt it across the board. No government spending should be reduced more than 2% per yer in order to soften the blow to those who benefit from that spending.

    Is my eyeroll evident?

When I look at the graphic (http://developer.apple.com/wwdc/) for the 2011 WWDC, it makes me think that the 3D rumor may be accurate. Note the many 3D patents that Apple has been awarded over the past couple of years for precisely this type of thing. And the fact that Apple has used their graphics on prior occasions to tease what would be revealed at the event - most recently, for the iPad2 and how they teased the SmartCover...

I dont know if 3D is dependent on hardware (most of Apples products have front facing cameras at this point at least), or if it can be driven by software alone on existing devices.

    Thoughts?

That sounds like it makes sense, but does ATT have LTE coverage? or will they by October?

AT&T is going to be busy revamping T-Mobile's towers, and they still have not upgraded there current system's for more bar's in more place's .

I've been in NYC where there supposed to be up to date and the latest technology, reset my iPhone so I was on there towers down there and still had 3 dropped calls , my friend who is Verizon has NEVER had a dropped call, either with there black berry or iPhone.

If Verizon would update there towers to all LTE I'd port over as soon as a LTE iPhone comes out but for now I'm still using a 3G iPhone and seriously thinking of going to a pay as you go till Apple, Verizon, & AT&T get there act together and start using technology of today and not the past, easier said than done but if they want to do it they will and soon.

Hopefully before the economy tanks out again

I haven't read the whole thread, but will throw in my two cents on the original topic. I think it's fair for MS to charge considerably more for an OS that represents a few years of work than Apple charges for their yearly OS. I prefer Apple's, and I buy each new Apple OS as it comes out, but I still think it's not fair to compare cost straight away. Microsoft's multi-level charging does seem a bit extreme though.

Frankly, the vast majority of users, and developers, and content providers, DO NOT care what you personally want, no matter how much you roll your eyes.

Flash is on virtually every computer on Earth, and pretty soon it will be on virtually every smart phone as well. Except the iPhone, of course.

Flash works very well, for the vast majority of users. The fact that Apple has not expended the minimum effort required to get Flash working more efficiently in OS X, is mostly problem for only those relatively few of us, who prefer to use Mac OS.

(In my testing on OS 10.6.1, Safari is by far the worst of all browsers at handling Flash: it pushes the CPU to 77%, while Firefox and Camino stay at less than 49%. Safari is also by far the worst on Windows 7, where on the same video it runs to almost 30% of CPU, while IE8 is at 1%, and Firefox and Chrome are at 4%.

The vast majority of users enjoy what Flash provides.

And, Flash does things which would be impossible, or very hard, or prohibitively expensive, to do with other currently available technologies, and deploy them for all browsers and systems.

So, I repeat: the rest of the world DOES NOT care, that you, and a handful of weird backroom guys, have an irrational hatred of Flash. Move on.

The bottom line is, if Apple doesn't get Flash on the iPhone, it will quickly lose market share to Android. It's a HUGE missing feature, bigger than cut/paste and turn-by turn navigation and mms rolled together, and you can bet it will be advertised as such.

    Agree to disagree!

However, it is not just me. Anyone that knows the history of the web and the technologies behind it including flash does not like Flash, and knows that it is an inefficient and unnecessary piece of crap. The fact that one of, if not the most powerful tech company on earth agrees might make you think twice!

What do you think Apple stands to gain from this? They are pushing OPEN STANDARDS! And if Flash is such a gaping hole in the iPhone why would such a huge powerful company let a flagship product wilt when there is nothing to gain from it for them? Think about it, that is how crappy Flash is!

Personally I am happy that there is a company out there like Apple that will do whatever it takes to push progress and top of the line technology in ways that no other company has the balls to do! I am glad that they are determined to weed out inferior technology in the name of progress! They even obsolete their own products at the hight of them being the most popular gadgets on earth, and WHY?... Because they thought of something cooler. You know any other company with the balls to do that? No, they would just milk the product as long as they possibly can, and then serve a minor update that isn't too cost prohibitive.

    Ya, I'll stick with Apple's M.O. Thanks! :p

the key issue in my case was that my macbook couldn't go to sleep or be closed, everytime it woke up, it wouldn't last longer than 3 seconds and then shut down and all of the other known symptoms.

I ran the firmware upgrade and it works fine now, it's not hot or anything and the fans seem to be working at a normal pace.

Well, I am grateful for the fact that I don't have to turn in the mac for 5 days or more for servicing... I make a living out of this thingy...:D

I second instadan. MacBook was working fine until the last Apple update, then started RSS.
After the new update it's fine. Running same temp a previously and fans also working as previously. Happy (for now).

Does anyone know if they resolved the issue of updates 'caching' on the App Store...i.e still showing the number of updates available badge even though they have been downloaded and installed???

Yes its fixed! I updated, had 5 apps in store to update. Updated, badge gone!

Doesn't matter how much they made.
It matters, because it proves "pirates" are not a big problem for Adobe.

If you want to use pro tools, you pay for them like an adult. Or you're just a thieving child.

    Calm down kid!

And btw, how can a "thieving child" use "pro tools" in a professional way? Does not make any sense.

I think we should call them "Professional Pirates (without a ship)". *lol*

As with all capacities you need to take into account that computers (and RAM manufacturers) calculates size in binary 2^10 = 1024 for thousand, while HD and Flash memory manufacturers calculate in decimal where 1000 = 1000.

For drives measured in GB this mean you need to multiply the drives size with ~0.93 to get the size your computer will calculate it to:
    2 GB ? 1.86 GB
    4 GB ? 3.72 GB
    8 GB ? 7.44 GB

So, yes in a way you are right, on the 8 GB nano about 550 MB will be "missing".

This has very little to do with formatting (this was an issue back when drives were just a couple of MB, then the formatting table and such actually took up a fair portion of the disk).

    This isn't exactly news.

Thanks Mitthrawnuruodo and Chundles. I know it's not news, but I wanted to know. Want a 2 gig, but did not want to lose too much space. 1.8 is fine. 1.4 would drive me to the 4 gig ( may anyways for th $50). Frankly, despite having more than 1,000 cd's plus iTunes downloads, I never filled up my 1gen Mini.

    Thanks again for the explanations.

I'm not sure how serious all the offers that Qaddafi has reportedly received for asylum, but there does seem to be some effort to help him leave.

I've also been thinking that the Arab League's support of the NFZ is probably in part because if all those EU and NATO planes are busy in Libya, they can't be flying over Yemen or Syria or any other troubled ME country.

The problem with Libya is that Qaddafi has encouraged tribal rivalries on a large scale. Post Qaddafi, Libya could end up a factionalized nightmare.

In essence booting out Qa-Daffy is no assurance of ending up with anything better or friendlier.
