So we must continue our imperial ways simply because of economic reasons?

Well, I suppose we could redesign the economy so that it does not go at the world's resources like a cloud of locusts, nor beats most of the country into whimpering blobs of gelatin and fails to manufacture terrorists through rapacious adventurism (ahem: what did they fly planes into?). Probably not, though, because then our tech-toy upgrade cycles would be much less regular, we would have to fix more stuff instead of replacing it, and there would simply not be enough margin to maintain the crucial upper class.

So, yeah, practically speaking, we have to.

All hail to the mighty status quo
    All things remain the same
    Inertia guide our straying course
And lead us back to whence we came

I am a professional editor. I get paid to edit. I just don't edit giant films. I think there is a little discrediting going on for what makes a professional editor.
I was in a discussion a year ago about all the new features that just got released. In the days of yesteryear, editors (film wise) would cut the film, then once they had a locked picture, they would add audio, color the film, sound effects and score. Those days are long gone.
A year ago during a project, I found myself very angry at the way FCP was functioning given the way editors have to edit today. I have been a big FCP user for years and consider myself very experienced with the software. I refer to the editing style of today (which is also being done in feature film editorial) that you are no longer just the film/video editor. YOU ARE the sound designer, the colorist, the composer, and the technician, at least a basic level.
I feel that 10 years ago you would show a "rough" cut that was 50% done, no audio effects, color, or score, just the cuts and clients were able to get it. However, today I feel that a rough cut needs to look more like 95% done. Many times when I show a client a piece of footage that doesnt look like an almost finished product, they get concerned about the final piece, even when you explain that it is a rough cut.
So now that a lot of editors are having to show cuts that are almost done to get notes, the actual act of editing has become a nightmare to me. I have show basically a finished cut (sounds, scores, titles, overlays, graphics) and then when there is a change, I have to move all of the sounds, scores, titles, overlays, graphics out of the way to make the simplest edit. Half the time, something gets moved that isnt supposed to causing extra work. And I will be honest, sometimes, (which I know we all do....) I say "good enough," because the actual act of moving a giant timeline around is just too painful.
    Well not anymore! (hopefully)
I want the freedom that FCPX will hopefully provide.
And of course one final thought. A good editor is a good editor, it is an art. Just because someone is an "expert" on AVID, PP, FCP doesnt mean they are a good editor. Same as someone who knows how to put paint on canvas isn't necessarily Van Gogh.
I think this version will help us tell stories easily and more efficiently. It is still up to the editor what he/she will do with the tool.

Fake. Apple "ordered" a company to send all its manuscripts to it?

Companies don't "order" each other around....that wouldn't get very far in the business world.

Obviously they are paying them to do it. I order McDonald's around every time I walk in there and order them to make me a McFlurry. I order Rubio's to make me a 99 cent fish taco. I order myself to shut up now or this could go on for hours:)

Wow. Hewitt is one of the big developers on the iPhone. That's a pretty big loss for the iPhone man. Some seriously big shoes for the new developer to fill.

    http://www.joehewitt.com/about.php

Seriously, if you think that's a big developer you live too much in Social Networking sites.

That guy doesn't touch tens of thousands of n-tier professional developers who write call center suites, engineering applications, Wall Street Financial applications, Power Plant applications, etc.

Seriously, he's a kid who got known for Firebug. BFD.

You know, If I had to guess, I'd say that most folks aren't so upset about submitting their apps as they are upset about the somewhat seemingly arbitrariness in what get's approved, and what doesn't and how long it takes, the vagueness of many of the reasons for declining an app, etc.

No it will not as I do not support cutting back on the Military ... we could use less freakin politicians and their waste than less Military personal

This shows you clearly don't understand how the military funds are used.

The troops cost $152.4 Billion....out of the $685.1 Billion 2010 military budget (which I don't think accounts for the massive CIA and so called "black budget).

Cutting military funding doesn't mean eliminating troops.

Been lurking for years (entertaining for sure), but I had to register because you clowns are missing the obvious on this one.

It is the infamous Mac iTablet (iPhone'esque only bigger), and the "in the air" part is... the keyboard.

It's a floating holographic projection type thing that you type on, therefore freeing up all screen real estate and no smudges.

The last time I checked the people of the Congo hadn't asked for US help. Or were you just attempting to confuse the issue?

I'm sure some of them have, sorta how some of the Libyan people have.

    Side note:
I'm seriously worried what will become of the power vacuum when Qaddafi leaves. To think the rebel forces are somehow an actual organized group is absurd. The only thing unifying many of these people is the will to see Qaddafi fall. After that there will be a mad struggle for power, most likely in conjunction with half assed elections.

This whole Libya situation is going to blow up in the not too distant future. I forsee the civil war shifting after Qaddafi leaves into the rebel forces fighting amongst themselves.

I shudder to think what is going to happen if we arm them, hopefully Obama wasn't just talking out of his ass when he said we actually need to learn from history for once. Our country's cycle of support>arm>aid>turn against>support new group needs to stop, as it is directly responsible for much of the instability we've seen in the world over the last 20+ years. We create our own enemies to fight after they no longer serve our interests.

I'm saying that all those people who said, "Everyone who likes the Beatles already have all of their albums" (ahem, that list includes me!) weren't just wrong, they were epically wrong.

Nice update for those who want an iMac. Decent bump for the Mac mini too..
I'm sure the MBP will be updated soon and possibly the MB..

Like many others, I'm waiting for something more powerful and expandable than a Mac mini, but not as expensive as a Mac Pro and does not have an integrated LCD like an iMac (I have a 24" Dell already).

    Something like:
1.83 Ghz Core Duo 2 (Conroe)
512 gig Ram (4 memory slots)
160Gig 3.5" SATA Drive (and one additonal empty bay)
    Dual Layer Superdrive
PCIe Video Card (ATI X1600 or NVidia 7300GT)
    1 additional PCI slot
    Bluetooth/Airport
in something like a mini-tower case (about 2/3 size of Mac Pro)

Starting about what the iMac starts at ($1199)... With a more loaded one
2.16Ghz, 1Gig Ram, 250Gig HD, better video (say 7600GT) going up to $1599 or so...

Crossing my fingers for the 12th!

Wow, this is great news, I'm impressed - I never saw a 24" iMac in the cards!

And, since it's Merom, this makes the likelihood of seeing a Conroe minitower even better - after all, Apple has to stick the Conroe chip in something, right? ;) :D As it stands now, since Merom is technically the "mobile chip", Apple has 5 mobile solutions (2 mobile MB/MBPs, 3 not-so-mobile iMacs) and a workstation solution (Mac Pro), so where is the desktop solution? :p

Workstations sit on desktops. :p :D

The security-through-obscurity myth of OS X has long been debunked. Do you know what the most used computer OS in the world is? Linux. And there are very, very few viruses for linux.

The rampant virus ecosystem is a flaw in Windows, not an inherent fact of all operating systems.

Macs have a decent market share and a very large mindshare, but yet are still virus free (though there have been a couple trojans that fizzled out).

Thank you. I do get tired of the old lie that Macs are only secure because they've not been targeted yet.

The better analogy is Windows is a house made of flimsy material. They keep putting new locks on the doors, but crooks keep finding ways to push through the flimsy walls. Meanwhile Macs are in a nice neighborhood that's not as populated all right, but they have a great security system. Whenever anyone tries to invade, the owner is immediately notified. Dopey owners occasionally give permission to the invaders who pretend to be their Uncle Bob, but most owners get suspicious of invaders no matter who they claim to be.

No matter how popular Macs will get, they will NEVER have the security issue that Windows has. It's all a matter of the underlying architecture.

some people just want an ipod for listening to music.
not every apple user in the world needs all that iOS stuff.

i'm really hoping for an ultimate classic model, but i'm being a bit hopeless.

    meantime I just bought a used 4g ipod classic 20gb for 30 (40$), it's wonderful :)

The only usable iPod is the iPod Touch. The ClickWheel "interface" of the classic is a royal pain in the back when you have to navigate through thousands of titles. And even the interface of the iPod Touch could be much better if they dropped all those useless animations and transition effects that only achieve one thing: They slow me down. And that is especially dangerous when using the bloody thing while driving a car.

Very often, I envy the people who have a USB port in their car radio; they just plug in a USB stick without all those unnecessary fancy things and they are not locked into the "iTunes experience" or any other DRM prison.

Surely there's a place for a high capacity iPod. 32GB doesn't cut it. Even 64GB doesn't cut it.

64 GB is six times the size of my current mp3 library. But I only keep the stuff that I actually like to hear. I'm no longer collecting full albums just because I can. It doesn't make sense to keep unnecessary things around just because you have the storage capacity for it. It's a waste.

The light cut of the Myriad font is probably used to indicate thin/light weight - as is the reference to air. I suspect that it's about the sub-notebook, which will be thinner than anything else on the market.

    Other possibilities:

    1. Inflight entertainment system - Dock connectors in every seat. iTunes/iPhone style touch interface in seatback displays - deal with American Airlines/British Airways/One World Alliance.

    2. "Cloud" services - something big like making .Mac free and re-branding it to attract PC / iTunes / iPhone users

Here in Brazil we have high taxes. Taxes are high and public services are of poor quality. The cost of labor is quite high, due to all the labor bureaucracy that punishes both employers and employees. The purpose of mounting the iPads here in Brazil is that they would not be able to pay some import taxes and enjoy some tax incentives that the Brazilian government grants to companies that assemble their products in national territory. Furthermore, we live in a fake democracy, in which the State is only concerned with lining their own pockets, leaving the needs of the Brazilian people in the last plan. That since 1500.

video and reading both require looking at the screen and less frequent input, and therfore would work well with a big screened, controls on back or sides style device.
The big problem is that the best display technology for reading (eInk) does not work for video, currently (too slow refresh rate). I would love one device for video and books, but it comes back to the ease of reading / power issue.
